Katie Williams-Briles

Katie Williams-Briles is Of Counsel in the firm’s education law team. Katie joined Lewis Kappes with over 10 years’ experience in education law, stemming from her former professional roles as staff attorney for the Indiana Department of Education and Legal Assistant to the Indiana Public Access Counselor. Early in her career, Katie served as legal counsel for the Indiana Department of Education (IDOE) where she provided guidance to the former State Charter School Board, implemented data share agreements, conducted Article 7 (Special Education) complaint investigations, wrote legal opinions for the Case Review Panel, and assisted school boards regarding Indiana’s Open Door and Access to Public Records Act to name a few.
Prior to joining Lewis Kappes, Katie served as the Compliance and Special Education Coordinator for Ball State’s Office of Charter Schools (OCS) for seven years, providing technical assistance to Ball State’s authorized charter schools and collaboratively assisting Ball State’s OCS staff and IDOE on the continued refinement and implementation of the compliance monitoring system for charter schools within the terms of their charter contract and federal, state, and local laws.
Katie also serves as General Counsel for the Indiana High School Athletic Association (IHSAA), where she advises the IHSAA regarding legal issues. Katie is largely tasked with assisting in the enforcement of IHSAA’s school-transfer policies.
Katie received her J.D. from Indiana University Maurer School of Law in 2007, where she was a quarterfinalist in the Sherman Minton Moot Court Competition and a member of the Sherman Minton Moot Court Board. Katie was also selected as a mediator for the Family and Children Mediation Clinic in the spring of 2007. Katie earned her Bachelor of Arts degree from Indiana University, with distinction, majoring in political science and criminal justice.
